The Secret World Continues To Struggle…Delays Announced

It has been a bumpy ride for Funcoms “Ground-Breaking” MMORPG since its release last month, and it doesn’t show any signs of improving. Firstly there was the negative press generated by the overall score given on Metacritic, rating the game at a mere 72/100. Funcom even released a statement blaming Metacritic for the games lackluster launch, despite the fact Metacritic generates scores based on the average across a number of unaffiliated websites. More recently, Funcom released another statement detailing a large reduction in their work force, resulting in a large number of layoffs.

As if all of that wasn’t bad enough, now it’s time for the subscribers to suffer. Many have blamed the failing of The Secret World on the severe lack of content, so the news of the release of Issue 2: Digging Deeper was a shining light in a very dark and gloomy tunnel but even that hasn’t worked out for Funcom. Originally slated for release August 28th, the update was supposed to introduce a large amount of content to the game, but players are going to have to wait a little longer as the release has been delayed until September 11th.

As you may know, this week has been a challenging one for everyone at Funcom. We initiated a process of reducing costs after the launch of The Secret World and this has naturally affected the production schedule as we work on readjusting the team and our internal development processes. As such, we have had to give ourselves a little more time to wrap up Issue #2 and the new release date for this update is September 11th, 2012.

A rough week? I don’t think The Secret World has evaded a rough patch since launch.
